Toenail Fungus Laser Treatment

Fungal toenail infections are unsightly, frustrating and affect approximately 14% of the population.

Fungal toenail infections often appear as yellow or white discoloration of the toenail, with debris accumulating under the nail bed. Left untreated, toenail fungus can result in crumbling and thickening of the nail, rough nail ridges and spreading of the infection to other toes.

The infection is caused by fungi that feed on Keratin; a protein found within our nails. The fungal colonies flourish in moist environments and spread slowly through the nail and nail bed.

Fungal toenail infections are often left untreated for long periods of time due to embarrassment and frustration with ineffective conservative treatments. Toenail fungus has previously been difficult to treat effectively and involved taking harmful anti-fungal medication, using pain-staking topical treatments and even surgery to remove the toenail. At Performance Podiatry we routinely treat these infections effectively with Toenail Fungus Laser Therapy.

Laser treatment is fast, safe, painless, and proven to be effective with NO side effects.

The choice by Performance Podiatry to use the Fox 1064 Diode, involved a considerable amount of research. The Diode laser was chosen due to its safety, reliability, and proven efficacy with comprehensive scientific studies to back it up.

How does toenail fungus laser therapy work?

The FOX laser emits near-infrared light at a wavelength of 1064 nm that passes through the nail plate and into the nail bed where the fungi are located. This results in heating of the fungi. With exposure to high temperatures the fungi are unable to replicate and this results in improvement of your toenail infection.

During the laser treatment, the laser will be slowly directed across the nail bed. The laser beam will generate heat beneath the nail and within the underlying fungal colony. You will feel a warm and warm sensation during the procedure. As the laser has no effect on healthy tissue, there are no side effects. You can comfortably walk out of the clinic following the procedure and resume normal daily activities.

How soon will I have clear nails?

Results are not immediate, but rather as the nail grows you will notice new, healthy growth from the nail base. Nails grow slowly so we will often see an improvement in the nails quickly, but a complete result is observed months following the procedure.
Will I need more than one treatment?

The number of treatments required is dependent on the severity and persistence of the affected nails. Research shows a result in over 80% of cases, however, a second treatment may be indicated for severely affected nails and persistent fungal strains. Your Podiatrist will discuss the possibility of having additional treatments and will also advise you on the proper care of your nails to minimise the risk of recurrence.
