WE TREAT PLANTAR WARTS

Are You Tired of Dealing with Painful & Persistent Plantar Warts?

Our knowledgeable Sydney podiatrists use Swift wart removal by Emblation, a fast and effective way to remove plantar warts. Suitable for kids and adults.

What Is A Plantar Wart?

A plantar wart is a benign lesion on the sole of the foot caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). It often appears as a rough, cauliflower-like lump with small black dots on its surface. These warts can be uncomfortable or even painful and exacerbated by walking or standing. Plantar warts develop after the body has come into contact with HPV. This can be in public places such as pools, gym showers and nail salons.

What Is Swift Wart Removal?

Swift wart removal is an evidence-based treatment for all types of plantar warts. It is effective against common warts, mosaic warts and flat warts. Swift uses microwave energy via a handpiece held against the wart skin. It quickly elevates the temperature of the wart and creates a precise and localised cell reaction. Swift does not break the skin and thus prioritises patient safety and recovery. It is effective and suitable for all ages.

How Does Swift Remove Warts?

Swift therapy causes cascades of immune reactions within plantar warts. It does this by triggering oscillation of water molecules in the warts cellular structure and it coagulates the blood vessels within the wart. The immune response effectively destroys the wart tissue without damaging the surrounding skin.

What Should I Expect During Swift Treatment?

During a Swift treatment, the podiatrist will apply a small probe to the wart for 2 seconds. Your podiatrist will repeat this until the desired amount of energy is administered to the wart and then your treatment is complete. You will be able to walk out with no pain and without the need for a dressing. You are able to continue with your activities of daily living as per usual, and you will be able to run, swim or dance as you wish!

How many Swift treatments will I need?

Our most common treatment time frame is one application per month, for 3 months. Some warts require less treatments and others require more, depending on factors such as how responsive your immune system is or how long they have been present.

Plantar Wart FAQs

Appearance

– Rough, hard bumps: Small, grainy growths on the sole of the foot, that can resemble a callous or a corn.
– Pain or mild discomfort: Can cause discomfort when walking or standing, often described as a dull ache. If left for a long time or if aggravated, they can become extremely painful due to a bursitis underlying the wart.
– Black Dots: Tiny black pigment that look like seeds in the wart, which are actually small blood vessels. When the overlying skin is removed, pin-point bleeding occurs.
– Calloused Skin: Overlying skin may become thick or calloused due to pressure.
– Colour: Usually flesh-coloured, but can be darker or greyish and can have black dots or bleeds easily.
– Shape: Typically round or oval, with a rough surface.
– Texture: The surface may be grainy or bumpy, but it may simply feel like a lump under the skin.
– Solo or in clusters: Plantar warts can exist on their own or in groups. These clusters are known as mosaic warts.

If you notice these signs, it’s a good idea to consult a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Causes

– Human Papillomavirus (HPV): Plantar warts are caused by a strain of HPV that infects the skin through small cuts or abrasions.
– Direct Contact: This is the easiest way to ‘catch’ a plantar wart. HPV spreads through direct skin contact with the virus, or in damp environments like swimming pools or locker rooms.
– Immune System Factors: A weakened immune system can increase susceptibility to warts. These are commonly seen in people with diabetes, autoimmune diseases or undergoing immunosuppressant treatment such as for cancer.

Treatment

Salicylic Acid: Our podiatrists may offer salicylic acid treatments for you to take home and continue treatment in conjunction with your Swift treatment.

Wart Curettage/Surgical Removal: Performed in the clinic under local anaesthetic. The wart tissue is surgically removed and then a caustic agent is applied to ‘seal’ the wound. A large dressing is applied and you are to elevate your foot for 24 hours.
Falknor’s Needling: Performed in the clinic under local anaesthetic. a needle is used to ‘poke’ the plantar wart in a repetitive action. This is thought to stimulate an immune response from your body by pushing some of the viral HPV cells into deeper tissues. In our experience this is a highly effective treatment and usually takes 2-3 treatments for stubborn warts.
Swift Treatment by a Podiatrist:
– What Is Swift Treatment: A non-invasive procedure using microwave energy to target and destroy the wart.

– How Does Swift Treatment Work: The podiatrist applies a small probe to the wart for a few seconds, delivering microwaves that generate heat and stimulate the body’s immune response to eliminate the wart.

– Benefits: Quick, safe, and effective with no need for anesthesia or downtime. Suitable for all ages.

Swift treatment offers a convenient and effective option for those seeking a quick resolution to plantar warts with minimal disruption to daily life.

Prevention

– Avoid Bare Feet: Wear shoes or sandals in public pools, locker rooms, and other shared spaces.
– Maintain Foot Hygiene: Keep feet clean and dry. Regularly wash and dry your feet thoroughly.
– Avoid Sharing Personal Items: Don’t share towels, shoes, or socks with others.
– Strengthen Immunity: A healthy immune system can help fend off HPV infections. Maintain a balanced diet and manage stress.

Recovery

Over-the-Counter Treatments:
Application of salicylic acid home treatment requires patience and perseverance as it can be slow and time-consuming. Keep in mind that over-the-counter treatments alone may not stimulate enough of an immune response from your body to resolve the wart. In these cases, you will need to seek professional treatment.
If these home treatments are applied incorrectly or beyond the margins of the plantar wart, it can cause a wound and scarring. Please be careful.

Professional Treatments:
Cryotherapy: Typically requires multiple sessions, with discomfort and possible blistering after each treatment.
Surgical Removal and Falknor’s Needling: Recovery can take a few weeks, with a slight risk of scarring and infection.

Swift Treatment by a Podiatrist:
No downtime required and patients can resume normal activities immediately. No risk of infection or scarring.
